Robert Johnson was the greatest of them all. Skip James, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Leadbelly were all masters of the acoustic blues but Robert Johnson wrote great stories, played awesome guitar and he had a voice that could swoop and soar like an angel or the devil.
He recorded all his songs live in one or two takes. To capture the essence of acoustic blues the artist has to be comfortable and confident that the magic will be captured. All you need is a great mic in an awesome room, a sympathetic engineer and time..
This track is from Lyrebird recorded at Goose in 2008 and features guitar, vocals, harmony and blues harp.
Muddy Waters started out playing acoustic but ended up with the most powerful electric outfit the blues has ever seen. For true power and raw energy check out the album 'Hard Again', produced by the wonderful Johnny Winter in the mid seventies.
The album was recorded live, with the band all in one room. You can hear Winter whooping in the background.
